Restored quarryMinerals can only be worked where they are found in nature and this is often in environmentally sensitive locations or in close proximity to communities. Extraction has the potential to create significant environmental effects in such locations. For example, a site can cause visual intrusion and it can generate noise, vibration and dust. The traffic generated can also have impact on the local environment.

SAMSA members recognise the importance good environmental performance and are committed to minimising environmental effects. The minerals industry is one of the most regulated industrial sectors and SAMSA members have a good record of compliance with regulations. Many of our Members have implemented certified environmental management systems (EMS). SAMSA members are also required to observe and implement a code of environmental practice.

Government issues guidance on environmental performance in Minerals Policy Statement 2: Controlling and Mitigating the Environmental Effects of Minerals Extraction in England.(http://www.odpm.gov.uk/index.asp?id=11441330)
This reflects current good practice and SAMSA members strive to implement the policies in the statement to ensure their developments proceed in accordance with current best practice. For further details see also www.mineralproducts.org and www.goodquarry.com
