Minerals Policy Statement 1: Planning and Minerals (MPS1)MPS1 and the accompanying Practice Guide was published by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) in November 2006. The documents can be viewed by clicking on this link: http://www.communities.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1504275 MPS1 sets out the Government’s aims and objectives for planning policy relating to minerals. Its fundamental aim is to ensure there is an adequate and steady supply essential minerals. SAMSA welcomes the Policy Statement as it recognises that minerals are essential for development and through that the quality of life and the creation on sustainable communities. The Guidance provides a good balance between the social, environmental and economic factors involved in supplying the nation’s needs for minerals in a sustainable way. SAMSA is pleased to note that MPS1 confirms that specific Government policy for silica sand contained in MPG15: Provision of Silica Sand in England remains in force with equivalent status to MPS 1. |
