| Key Issues - Respirable Crystalline Silica | |
|
Respirable Crystalline SilicaCrystalline silica is an essential component of materials which have an abundance of uses in industry and our everyday lives. For many years it has been known that the inhalation of fine dust containing crystalline silica can cause lung damage (silicosis). However, any health risks can be controlled by appropriate measures and SAMSA, through its sister European Trade Association (Eurosil), has been closely involved in the negotiations on the Social Dialogue Agreement on workers health protection through good handling and use of crystalline silica and products containing it. The agreement, which is recognised by the European Commission, was signed in April 2006 and came into force in October 2006. It provides the framework for the reduction of exposure and for a high level of protection of the employees potentially exposed to respirable crystalline silica. SAMSA is now working with its members to implement the Agreement. A copy of the Social Dialogue Agreement and the accompanying Good Practice Guide can be viewed by clicking on this link |
